Domaine Vieux Télégraphe

Domaine Vieux Télégraphe is one of the most venerable and iconic estates in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC in the Southern Rhône wine region of France. Founded in 1898 by Hippolyte Brunier, the winery has been a benchmark for quality and tradition for over a century. Located on the famous plateau of La Crau, the estate is named after the old telegraph tower built in 1792 by Claude Chappe, which sits nearby and was once used for transmitting messages between Paris and Marseille.

As of my last update, the Brunier family, now in its fifth generation, continues to manage Domaine Vieux Télégraphe. The winery is currently overseen by brothers Frédéric and Daniel Brunier, who maintain the family's commitment to expressing the unique terroir of their vineyards in each bottle they produce.

The vineyards cover about 70 hectares (approximately 173 acres) and are located at an altitude of around 100 meters above sea level, benefitting from the cool breezes that temper the Mediterranean heat, which is crucial for the grapes to develop complexity and balance. The soil in La Crau is characterized by its large galets roulés, or rounded stones, which retain heat and release it during the night, aiding in the ripening process of the grapes. These stones also reflect sunlight onto the grapevines, contributing to their maturation.

Domaine Vieux Télégraphe is renowned for its classic red Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a blend that is typically dominated by Grenache, with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and sometimes other permitted varieties, contributing to the blend. The estate's red wines are cherished for their robust character, earthiness, and ability to age and develop in the bottle over many years. The vineyards are farmed with sustainable practices, and the winemaking process involves a combination of traditional and modern techniques, with fermentation in stainless steel or concrete tanks and aging in large oak foudres.

The estate also produces white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is far less common than the reds and is composed of a blend of Clairette, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, and Bourboulenc. These wines are appreciated for their aromatic complexity, elegance, and capacity to pair wonderfully with a variety of cuisines, especially those rich in cream and butter.
