Tachinomi Fujiya Honten

Fujiya Honten has been in the Shibuya drinking trade since 1883, when the business operated as a neighbourhood liquor shop. The tachinomi bar that carries its name today continues that lineage in format and intent: customers stand, order small plates, drink, and move on. There are no concessions to comfort beyond the glass in hand. The food programme keeps close to the model of old-school Tokyo taishū sakaba, the democratic, working-crowd drinking spots that once anchored station neighbourhoods across the city.

Small plates are priced to accompany alcohol rather than to anchor a meal, and the kitchen tilts toward fish and seafood. Documented offerings include sardine nori rolls, seared yellowtail with salt, shiitake tempura, and ham with cabbage: the kind of direct, well-matched snacks that have always defined the tachinomi category. The Sakuragaoka address places it just off the south exit of Shibuya Station, a pocket of the ward that retains some of the density and informality that the wider Shibuya redevelopment has been methodically removing. That context matters.

A standing bar run by a liquor group founded in the nineteenth century, still operating on low margins and high turnover in a neighbourhood facing sustained commercial pressure, occupies a different register from the craft izakayas and curated highball bars that now dominate the area's coverage. The appeal is less about discovery and more about a format that has worked continuously for well over a century.
