Sosharu in London reimagined the izakaya as Modern Japanese dining on Turnmill Street, Clerkenwell. Expect teppanyaki, tempura and a cooked-focused menu with standout Pork Katsu, Stuffed Chicken Wings and Scallops in Yuzu Butter. The original venue paired a 10-seat Kisetsu omakase counter with a 75 to 80-seat dining room and a basement cocktail bar, Seven Tails, all set inside a Neri&Hu timber 'house within a house' interior. Opened March 2016 under chef Alex Craciun and Jason Atherton’s group, Sosharu earned critical attention for its seasonal British ingredients and approachable technique. Note: the Turnmill Street site closed in August 2018; follow for news of any return or pop-up events.

About

Sosharu in London arrived in March 2016 as Jason Atherton’s first dedicated Japanese izakaya concept, and the name set the tone: social dining with carefully prepared plates. From the street at 64 Turnmill Street, Clerkenwell, guests entered a timber-framed dining room by Neri&Hu that felt direct and intimate. The restaurant combined a main 75 to 80-seat izakaya floor with Kisetsu, a 10-seat omakase counter where chefs plated seasonal, counter-led service.

Modern Japanese techniques like teppanyaki grills, precise tempura battering and kombu-based dressings defined the menu, while a basement cocktail bar called Seven Tails rounded the evening with inventive drinks and quieter late-night seating. London diners found the experience tactile and approachable, with food built for sharing and conversation.
