REVIEW & BAR SUMMARY
In Historic Filipinotown, Genever Los Angeles redefined luxury cocktail culture through the pioneering vision of three Filipina entrepreneurs who transformed a 1,100-square-foot space into one of North America's most celebrated bars. This groundbreaking establishment, the only liquor bar in Los Angeles fully owned by women of color, elevated gin-focused mixology while honoring Filipino heritage through every meticulously crafted cocktail.
Founded by Roselma Samala, Christine Sumiller, and Patricia Perez—three UCLA graduates who formed Red Capiz Partners—Genever emerged from a New Year's Day brainstorm in 2013 and a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised nearly $39,000. Opening in March 2018 under Beverage Director Kelso Norris, the bar quickly earned recognition among North America's finest cocktail destinations. The name "Genever," referencing gin's Dutch predecessor, embodied both the bar's feminine spirit and its commitment to honoring cocktail heritage while pushing creative boundaries.
Genever's cocktail program distinguished itself through innovative use of Filipino and Asian-Pacific ingredients, transforming traditional spirits with calamansi, panutsa palm sugar, pandan, and sago. The seasonally rotating menu showcased house-infused spirits and botanical-driven creations, with signature gimlets and gin & tonics that evolved based on available botanicals. This Los Angeles cocktail bar elevated genever and gin-based drinks to new heights, offering premium craft cocktails that celebrated both technical precision and cultural storytelling. Each drink represented a masterclass in mixology, incorporating custom infusions and rare botanicals that created unforgettable flavor profiles.
Designed by Natalie Kazanjian, the intimate Art Deco interior featured sage banquettes, gilded walls, and romantic lighting that fostered an exclusive, speakeasy-like atmosphere. The compact space's warm aesthetic encouraged community connection, with the bar counter serving as the focal point for personalized service and cocktail education. Staff approached hospitality with genuine warmth, guiding guests through the innovative menu while creating an inclusive environment that welcomed both cocktail connoisseurs and curious newcomers. The intimate setting often resulted in a packed house, generating an energetic buzz that became part of Genever's distinctive charm.
Though Genever closed in early 2023, its legacy endures as a model for culturally rooted luxury bars in Los Angeles. This award-winning establishment proved that authentic storytelling, innovative mixology, and community connection could create an unparalleled cocktail experience. For those seeking inspiration from Los Angeles's most groundbreaking bars, Genever's influence continues to shape the city's cocktail landscape, demonstrating how cultural heritage and premium craftsmanship can redefine luxury hospitality.
