About

Where the bold flavors of three Southeast Asian culinary traditions converge, Kaliwa Washington D.C. transforms The Wharf's waterfront into a vibrant celebration of Filipino, Korean, and Thai gastronomy. Named for the Tagalog word meaning "left"—symbolizing a different perspective and good fortune—this expansive 240-seat destination offers an authentic yet accessible journey through the region's most compelling dishes.

The vision of Irish-born Chef Cathal Armstrong and his Filipina wife Meshelle, Kaliwa emerged from a year-long proof of concept at Armstrong's acclaimed Restaurant Eve. Under the culinary direction of Filipino chef de cuisine Paolo Dungca, whose roots in San Fernando and Manila inform every dish, the restaurant has established itself as Washington D.C.'s premier Southeast Asian dining destination since opening in 2018. Part of the award-winning Eat Good Food Group portfolio, Kaliwa represents a deeply personal cultural bridge between Armstrong's restaurant expertise and his family's Filipino heritage.

The menu divides into three distinct sections, each featuring eight carefully curated dishes that honor traditional flavors without compromise. Filipino highlights include hand-chopped lumpiang Shanghai with pork and shrimp, the beloved sisig preparation, and kinilaw featuring pristine raw hamachi. Korean offerings showcase authentic galbi and other classics, while Thai selections maintain their traditional heat and complexity. Dungca's commitment to authenticity extends to adventurous daily specials like blood-spiked dinuguan, ensuring flavors remain true to their cultural origins rather than adapted for American palates.

The restaurant's design embraces Southeast Asian warmth through wicker furnishings, rich wood accents, and cozy red banquettes illuminated by distinctive basket lamps and imported chandeliers. The prime corner location between two Wharf hotels maximizes waterfront views, while the open kitchen featuring multiple wok stations and wood-fire grills creates an energetic theater of culinary craft. With 180 indoor seats and 60 outdoor, the space accommodates both reservations and walk-ins, maintaining an accessible yet elevated atmosphere.

Beverage director Todd Thrasher's program perfectly complements the cuisine's bold flavors through fruit-forward cocktails featuring mango, coconut, and banana, alongside frozen Mai Tais and an extensive selection of Asian beers from the Philippines, Korea, Thailand, Laos, Japan, and China. The wine list balances international selections with Southeast Asian-inspired coffee lattes, including champurrado-flavored creations.

For Washington D.C. fine dining enthusiasts seeking authentic Southeast Asian flavors in a sophisticated waterfront setting, Kaliwa offers an unparalleled cultural dining experience. Reservations are recommended, though the restaurant's walk-in policy and late-night service during Wharf concerts ensure accessibility for spontaneous culinary adventures.
