Set alongside northeast South Africa’s Kruger National Park, Kapama Private Game Reserve covers some 15,000 hectares of protected land, rich with wildlife, including the Big Five. Four lodges operate under the Kapama banner, but none are more luxurious than Kapama Karula, the reserve’s flagship lodge, which offers a no-compromises luxury experience along with total immersion in the natural environment. In fact safari lodges, in South Africa or anywhere else, don’t get much more plush or more stylish than Karula. Here contemporary architecture and design meet hand-crafted rustic textures to dramatic effect. Each villa features plentiful indoor and outdoor lounge space, and there’s a common bar and lounge for a bit more sociability, as well as a restaurant serving fine locally inspired fare. Game drives, naturally, are the primary activity, though the lodge’s spa makes a compelling case for an afternoon off.
