Deetjen's Big Sur Inn is a collection of hand-built redwood cabins and rooms tucked into a wooded canyon along Highway 1. Helmuth “Grandpa” Deetjen began building here in 1936, creating a deeply personal Norwegian-influenced property that is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The inn's 20 individually styled rooms retain antique furnishings and a deliberate absence of television, Wi-Fi and in-room telephones. Some rooms share bathrooms, while others add private baths, fireplaces, creek views or decks. The experience is rustic and intimate rather than resort-like, with redwoods, gardens and the sound of the creek setting the pace.
Guests check in between 4 and 7 p.m. and check out at noon. The property is non-smoking and does not allow pets. Weekend and holiday stays generally require a two-night minimum, and quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. The on-site Deetjen's Restaurant serves breakfast daily and dinner Friday through Tuesday.
