Monsieur Benjamin
RESTAURANT SUMMARY

In the heart of San Francisco's Hayes Valley, Monsieur Benjamin elevated French bistro dining through James Beard Award-winning chef Corey Lee's modern interpretation of Parisian classics. This contemporary French restaurant seamlessly blended traditional bistro warmth with California's innovative culinary spirit, creating an unforgettable fine dining experience that defined sophisticated casual luxury.
Opened in 2014 as the more approachable sister to Lee's three-Michelin-starred Benu, Monsieur Benjamin represented a decade-long love letter to French gastronomy. Chef de cuisine Jason Berthold, a French Laundry and Per Se alumnus, collaborated with Lee to craft an authentic yet inventive menu that honored Gallic tradition while celebrating Bay Area ingredients. The restaurant earned critical acclaim, including a coveted three-star review from the San Francisco Chronicle, establishing itself as one of the best restaurants San Francisco offered for French cuisine enthusiasts.
The cuisine showcased elevated bistro classics with contemporary finesse, featuring signature dishes like beef tongue Dijonnaise with herbes salées and rye croutons, Arctic char amandine with haricots verts and sunchokes, and the restaurant's celebrated duck leg confit served with Le Puy lentils and smoked bacon. The menu's crown jewel, a 14-ounce prime ribeye steak frites grilled in a charcoal oven with Sauce Choron, exemplified the kitchen's commitment to both tradition and innovation. Pastry chef Courtney Schmidig's desserts, including chocolate soufflé with banana ice cream, provided the perfect finale to each meal.
Designed by Aidlin Darling Design, the 110-seat space featured floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Hayes Valley, creating an bright yet intimate atmosphere enhanced by white oak paneling, custom brass bar details, and classic French touches like white paper tablecloths and Opinel knives. The semi-open kitchen design allowed diners to witness culinary artistry in action, while the marble-topped bar served French-focused wines and sophisticated cocktails like "The Ace," crafted with rye, Calvados, sloe gin, honey, lemon, and rosemary. The restaurant's unique walk-through kitchen corridor immersed guests in the bustling energy that defined the Monsieur Benjamin experience.
Though Monsieur Benjamin closed in June 2024 after a remarkable decade, its legacy as San Francisco's premier modern French bistro endures. The restaurant proved that casual elegance and culinary excellence could coexist, offering both neighborhood regulars and discerning visitors an authentic taste of Parisian sophistication in the heart of California.
