About

Hiding in an old, 19th century barracks behind the majestic Uspenski Cathedral in Helsinki’s southern harbor, Le Petit Chaperon Rouge is like a postcard from the past, with a soupçon of today’s rapid globalization. In this cozy, atmospheric space you can enjoy a few small dishes accompanied by a glass or two recommended by le sommelier Justus Mättö. This type of pure bistro food and milieu was a rarity in Finland––until now.

The bistro takes its French name from the famous nursery rhyme The Little Red Riding Hood. Hilkka, owner Marleena Niveri’s cute little Brussels Griffon, tiptoes unnoticeably among the guests, like a most benign version of the tale’s “big bad wolf”. It’s a heartwarming inside joke that will put a smile on the sharp thinker’s face.

When you’ve had enough of Finnish minimalism and need an injection of western European flair, let Justus pick some wines and mesmerize you with insights on the origins of what you’re sipping. The food, prepared by Joonas Alhainen, is simple and tasty, exactly as it should be at a bistro. Seasons change, and so do the dishes accordingly.

Joonas’ risotto, however, is a permanent star on the menu. Try it and you’ll understand why. Published June, 2019.
