Distilleries and tequila houses

These stops show Tequila through production, tasting, and the historic distilling core that shapes the city’s drinking culture.

  • Jose Cuervo (La Rojeña)

Jose Cuervo (La Rojeña), in Tequila, has been in continuous operation longer than every other tequila distillery anywhere. In Latin America, it is the oldest distillery still working. Its commercial tequila licence, the first official one issued, dates to 1795.

La Perseverancia (Casa Sauza), in Tequila, is the historic distillery of the Sauza family, among the town’s founding producers. This distillery dates to 1873. Tequila’s first production happened at this house, as did its first export. Ovens heated by steam are still on site, along with a family museum of the house’s production.

  • El Tequileño

A working La Guarreña distillery that has produced only El Tequileño tequila since 1959. Its guided tasting format and production-area feel make it one of the town’s clearest ways to understand tequila in place.
