Its discreet location – set between the wine fridges of La Cantine du Faubourg – further enhances its exclusive, intriguing appeal. Hidden away as it is, it creates a late-night atmosphere rather than a fine dining one, which fits the setup perfectly. Seating just 40-ish diners in the moody space, the restaurant offers a delightful menu of creative Japanese plates, while the room’s compact layout keeps the atmosphere lively – as do the cool beats making it a night out as well. With its dimly lit ambience and snug booths, Gohan offers an intimate dining experience well-suited for a romantic date, thanks to its low lighting and cosy setting, helping create a comfortable atmosphere. When it comes to what’s on the plate, Japanese small bites are served from an open kitchen, blending tradition and fusion. Sushi and sashimi meet kushiyaki, all described as ‘Elegant Street Food with RNB vibes’. Highlights include barbecue lamb short ribs with togarashi and crispy Chilean sea bass with Japanese curry. More luxurious dishes feature barbecued eel, foie gras terrine (or seared in a brioche bun), and sushi with wagyu, caviar, otoro and foie gras. Simpler fare, such as gazpacho and salmon tartare, remain delicious. Under corporate chef Gilles Bosquet, Gohan brings well-honed flair to the table.
