Matterhorn

Since 1963, Matterhorn has evolved from a Swiss café into a celebrated bar at 106 Cuba Street, Te Aro, Wellington 6011, New Zealand, and was ranked No. 16 on The World’s 50 Best Bars list. Founded by two Swiss brothers, Matterhorn began as a narrow café serving fondue and pastries with Swiss maid service.

Through the decades, Christian McCabe and architect Allistar Cox transformed this cultural cornerstone into a multifaceted bar and restaurant. The venue's status was cemented when Fat Freddy's Drop recorded their platinum album here in 2001. Matterhorn's cocktail program features a 42-strong menu that showcases local ingredients and house-made components.

The Falling Water cocktail, crafted with Ch'i, 42 Below feijoa vodka, and cucumber by ex-bar managers Jacob Briars and Riki Carter, has achieved international recognition. Regular staff cocktail competitions ensure the menu remains fresh and inventive, while the extensive spirits collection emphasizes premium New Zealand and international labels. The mixology philosophy centers on originality and local terroir, creating signature drinks that capture Wellington's distinctive character through sophisticated craft cocktail techniques.

The venue's design creates an intimate experience across multiple spaces. Cox's architectural vision features low lighting with warm, woody ceilings punctuated by inset lamps, creating the well-suited ambiance for both quiet conversations and lively gatherings. Sixties-inspired tiling pays homage to the venue's heritage, while the layout flows seamlessly between the moody main bar, relaxed lounge areas, and the coveted outdoor garden courtyard.
