When Rug Company founders Christopher and Suzanne Sharp purchased the historic palazzo, they planned to make it their own country retreat, but instead pivoted to a hospitality play, their first ever: “It feels like staying in a private and beautiful Maltese home, than a hotel,” raves Jules Maury. The decor is fittingly sumptuous—think Sicilian tiles, frescoes and bespoke wallpapers—and it’s protected from the hubbub of Valletta in a country town, 15 minutes’ drive away. All but one of the 17 rooms have their own outdoor space, but one is a real jaw-dropper: suite 5, where the bathroom has been sensitively created out of the original family chapel.
